Mr. Smith's Top Ten Lists of 2012

What you may find interesting about me...
I have been an educator for several years. The majority of my career have been spent teaching fifth grade. I have been teaching at Brier Creek since its inception in 2006. Prior to coming to Brier Creek, I taught at Dillard Drive Elementary in Raleigh and at Salemburg Elementary in Sampson County, North Carolina. My education background include a Bachelor's in Elementary Education from Ohio University.
I recently got married to my beautiful bride, Christine, in May. My stepdaughter, Mary, is in third grade this year and my stepson, Henry, is a seventh grader. Christine and I recently took our honeymoon to Alaska in late June and early July. Our adventures included sea kayaking in Resurrection Bay outside of Seward, Alaska (see picture below) and being followed by a curious harbor seal, flying by within five miles of the summit of Denali (Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in North America) and landing on Ruth Glacier, and enduring an all day 92 mile jaunt into Denali National Park where a highlight included seeing a mama grizzly bear and her two cubs playing in the road. It was a great honeymoon.
Although I currently call North Carolina home, I am a native of Cleveland, Ohio. I am a devoted fan of the Cleveland Indians and Cleveland Browns. Soccer was the main sport of my youth and was that way through college and still dabble in the occasional pick-up game but it has been a while. I love going to athletic events especially baseball games featuring the minor league Bulls.
Despite my hearing impairment (I wear a hearing aid in my left ear), I enjoy listening to music. I listen to almost everything, but my taste focuses on the rock and alternative sounds. I enjoy reading, mostly fictional works of great writers like Kerouac, Vonnegut, Steinbeck, and Llosa to name a few. I'm a huge movie fan and love to go the movies. The kid side of me enjoys collecting baseball card and gear my collections towards rookie cards.
I love to spend time outdoors whenever I can. I love to go hiking and camping. I enjoy travelling. After college graduation, I did a solo expedition of the West. For a few months, I explored the mountains, deserts, prairies, and canyons of the Western part of the United States. I met a lot of interesting people and animals including Mr. Grizzly on a hiking trail in Yellowstone on this journey.
I look forward to working with you this year.
